In post World War II Tokyo, a city hall bureaucrat with a monotonous life learns that he has a terminal cancer. He decides to live the last months of his life intensely, but it leaves him feeling empty. While dying, he discovers the meaning of life and fights for the construction of a playground in a poor neighborhood.
