During a civil war in Japan in 1572, warlords Shingen Takeda, Nobunaga Oda, and Ieyasu Tokugawa fight over the conquest of Kyoto. When Shingen is mortally wounded, the Takeda clan conceals his death and uses the poor thief Kagemusha as his double to keep their enemies at bay. Over time, Kagemusha adopts the warrior spirit of the dead warlord.
