Elena is the mountain village's Binukot (kept maiden), meaning she was chosen as the fairest amongst the women there. As such, she was confined inside her house with her face always covered by a veil. Chosen to keep the oral tradition of the village alive, she must eventually pass on all she knows to a new Binukot.
