Sent to the countryside to collect happy folk songs for the Communist Party, a Chinese soldier stays with a peasant family and learns all their songs are about hardship and suffering like their lives. He meets a 14-year-old girl, who has been sold off for marriage, and she is spellbound by his talk of the freedom women have under communism.
