Xiao Xiao is a 12-year-old girl sold by her heavily indebted parents to be the wife of a two-year-old boy from a strictly traditional rural family in early 20th Century China. After seeing young women in a nearby town who can read and experience freedom, Xiaoxiao starts a passionate affair with a peasant, becomes pregnant, and must face the consequences.
