After his father commits suicide, Machisu is sent to an orphanage by his relatives. As a young man, Machisu attends art school, but struggles with his painting and financially. He takes a job, where he meets his wife, Sachiko who seems to grasp his artistic vision and supports him faithfully through middle age until their daughter dies.
