A brave samurai, who has fallen on hard times, accepts a village's desperate request to be protected against roving bandits who steal their food and belongings. He gathers six other masterless samurai to join him, and they teach the villagers how to defend themselves in exchange for three small meals a day. The story climaxes in a bloody battle when 40 bandits attack the village.
