In a 19th Century Japanese village, a person reaching 70 must travel to a remote mountain to die of starvation. Orin is healthy at 69, but she will not cling to life. But first she sees to the affairs of her village and family, severely punishing a family for stealing food and finding a new wife for her eldest son.
