Shinnojo, a lowly samurai who is the food-taster for a feudal lord, becomes blinded after eating sashimi that was out of season. Fearing poverty, his wife Kayo seeks the help of Toya Shimada, the chief duty officer of the castle and a samurai of high rank, but he takes advantage of her instead. Enraged, Shinnojo challenges Shimada to a duel.
