In 12th Century Japan, a bandit kills a samurai as he protects his wife. The bandit is captured and tried, but his story and the wife's are so different that a psychic is retained so the murdered man can give testimony, which is also different. Finally, a woodcutter reveals he witnessed the event, but his version is different as well.
