In 1920s China, a young woman is sold into marriage with a wealthy distillery owner who is afflicted with leprosy. After he dies mysteriously, murder is suspected, but nothing can be proven and she inherits the property. After a period of struggle, she inspires the workers, and the distillery returns to prosperity until the Japanese invade.
