Jing, a naive city schoolgirl, her mother, and siblings are transferred to a remote village for "re-education" during the Cultural Revolution because her father has been jailed for being "rightist". A better future depends on their good behavior, but Jing's prudent and peaceful existence is disrupted when she meets the charming son of an elite military member.
