Inspired by the true stories of Vietnamese who fled and those who stayed behind after the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, the story follows a family’s struggle for freedom. Long Nguyen decides to stay behind and he is imprisoned in a Communist re-education camp, while his family escapes by boat and resettles in America.
