In the 1980s, encouraged by the government, many families left Chinese cities to settle in the poorer regions of the country to develop local industry. A 19-year-old girl lives happily in the remote Guizhou province, where she has grown up, made friends, and first falls in love, but her father now believes their future lies in Shanghai.
